So it has been a while since my last post and i figured i should share my recent goings on. I have not stopped art-ing in my break from school. i have been drawing and painting just about everyday and i have taken up the profession of Non-Commissioned Exterior Decorator*.
(*That is not an admission of guilt to any future vandalism charges.)
There are a bunch of these that i don't have pictures of yet but these are some of the important ones. I will be photographing the others shortly. You may also notice the spiffy new layout of the blog, i was getting tired of all the interesting and vibrant colors so i switched to a dark grey. by the way for the three of you that will probably ever read this that was sarcasm.

The last painting is courtesy of Gadzooks.

some day i will get a better picture of the one on the top of the dinosaur breathing fire on the robot. that one was a collaborative effort with a cybernetic luchador compadre of mine.

i ended up going with the one where they are rocking out to congress. that's theo roosevelt on the banjo A-Jax on the tables and G' Wash is going to be crowd surfing with a base guitar once i draw him. im going to go with the blue color scheme *see post below there are a few things missing, like andrew jackson's neck for example, but i'll get to painting it soon enough.

here is a quick color comp for the t-shirt i am going to make as a leave behind item for my self promo prof. i asked him what his favorite food is and he said it was eel sushi. so here it is in all of its majesty. better known as unagi domini. still trying to decide whether i should make the eel the orangy color it is after being cooked or to have it green. also i may or may not add other smaller sushi(s) below it in their own rice mandorlas. oh and the more orangey yellow is actually going to be gold paint like a proper byzantine mosaic.

here is the first post that is actually for school in a while. and one of the last ever!!! a week from tomorrow i will have in my hands a shiny new B.F.A! so i figure i might as well have as much fun with my projects as i can until i have art directors on my back. i saw a guy sleeping on a park bench here in savannah and some pigeons were getting dangerously close . . . you can see where this idea came from. i am actually going with the one that is right under the one that is colored. but i will be using basically the same colors. ONE WEEK!

i just spent the last hour playing around with PHOTOSHOP CS5! very cool but not as cool as i had expected. didnt think i would end up saying this but even though they have the new "painter" style brushes corel still has them beat in "blendability". i just realized a second ago that the guy i just painted looks a bit like shaggy from scooby doo! completely unintentional.

Behold the power of my fully ARMED and OPERATIONAL battl. . . illustration website!
my website is now up and working!! its still a little rough around the edges but the gallery works and everything. . . go here!!!

ok i guess i'll finish the other one later. i started painting more on this one. the robot is a guy i used to draw in high school and was the first thing that i ever painted. if i can find the shirt that i painted him on i will put it up. these practice paintings i am doing are just quick practices so that i can work on my command of color schemes and just so that i can get faster and better at painting. i have always had a very strong emphasis on my drawing (which isn't bad i love drawing) but now i am trying to get out of my comfort zone and work on this while i still have the time to slack off on it. listen to me! i sound official! funny how i slack off from work with more work . . . oh and my website is now up (none of the links to the pages besides the home page are working yet but you can look at my homepage all day long if you want to . . . i know i do.

another definitely not finished practice painting and a new start on an old drawing . . . can you tell im focusing on my medieval art paper?

This is the underpainting for another "just for fun" thing. well it's not completely just for fun, i am trying to practice different techniques for getting color schemes and rendering quickly on the computer. woo! Fun! i will finish it soon enough. this is only the underpainting so i am not completely sure what the colors will be.

i think this is pretty much done. i am going to go get a test print of this now and see how it looks before i send it to gotprint.

Thursday, April 29, 2010

so today i decided to try painting FOR FUN!!!!!! oh man when does that ever get to happen!!!?? no really i love my work and i enjoy every bit of my homework (excluding art history). i did each of these in about an hour. i have been looking at a lot of concept art recently especially that of ashley wood. his colors and use of texture is so great. plus his sort of "lets pretend to be super serious concept art and then throw in a kitten fighting a giant robot" subject matter is great too. i started out with some black shapes and tried to carve them out into something that i thought it kind of looked like. add lights and darks and a good background and . . . yeah. the first one is i guess some giant one eyed bunny zapping some girl's head and making it smaller . . . and her shoulder too big . . . and dont even ask about her left arm . . .im not crazy i swear! and the second one is well . . . i like dinosaurs ok! i will add more detail to them as i get more free time.

This is only a test!!!! chhhhhh. its actually just a color comp test for my fish mailer. i colored over my sketch in photoshop instead of paying attention in medival art . . .

Sunday, April 25, 2010

I said it was almost done last time but i have spent the better part of today finishing this up but in the end i am really happy with it. Woooooo! lets just hope the NEO does their job!

Saturday, April 24, 2010

This one too, is almost done. i just need to decide what i am going to do for text. something hand drawn . . . also it needs some more texture . . . yes . . . yes.
The one is almost done just a bit more playing around and i will be finished with it at long last!

If you are an art director and you are reading this, (first of all awesome!) expect to be getting something like this in the mail from me in the near future. . . along with hundreds of other ones from every other illustrator looking for a job . . . but theirs don't have giant fish monsters on them! anyway i think i will go with the one on the bottom but i will add a guy holding on for dear life to one of the fishing rods. probably gonna do it in some combination of gouache and acrylic and ink 'cause i'm tired of staring at a computer screen all day long. he says while blogging . . .

Here is the linework for my next digital painting which i will do in both painter and photoshop (Rob Macdonald this one's for you!) It is a poster in support of the N.E.O. or the Near Earth Object program run by NASA. they look for asteroids or other bits of space junk that are on collision courses with earth in an attempt to prevent what happened to the dinosaurs from happening to us. i may or may not lose some or all of the clouds. i like them but they are a bit distracting from the main shapes of the design. plus its like a poster and its supposed to be like all graphic and stuff.

as an addendum i have added the colors that i have blocked in for this piece as a color comp. from here i will add a little rendering and some more texture to make it look more finished.

A half finished painting of . . . wait . . . who is that in this painting? she looks awfuly familiar . . . anyway its an ad for trader joe's. trader joe's sells good food and everyone's got their's. this is my first attempt at using corel painter and i must say. i hate it. not the painting but the program give me ol' faithful photoshoppe any day of the week. it takes longer to paint in painter than it does to paint in real life! food!!
